Additional Information
As you know, the exact date of opening our u-pick orchard to the public is weather dependent but it has typically been around July 1. A specific day will be provided some time in mid to late June as we monitor the crops. Once open, we will be open 7 a .m. to 6 p.m. daily, 7 days a week, until somewhere near the end of August whenever we are sold out completely. There are many varieties of cherries that ripen at different times throughout the season, with the earliest being the Chelan in July and others as the summer progresses
We have picnic tables, so you can bring your lunch and enjoy a beautiful day under the Okanagan/Vernon sun. We will provide you with cardboard boxes and plastic bags to take your fruit home with you.
We will provide you with picking pails. Ladders are available throughout the orchard, to use at your own risk; however, the fruit trees are pruned in a such a fashion that ladders are generally not necessary but are an option for you.
We also offer ready picked cherries and provide an automated cherry pitting service for larger quantities. Any amounts of 400 lbs and over qualifies for a free delivery within 80 km from the orchard. Please note that cherry pitting during extreme busy periods may not be immediately available if we are under staffed. However, in that case you arrange to pick them up pitted later that day.
We also offer cold beverages, local honey, freshly made jams that are often still warm at reasonable prices.
When you harvest cherries it is best to leave the stems attached if you do not plan to eat them immediately. This practice helps keep the cherries fresh for a longer time. It is also very important to avoid damaging the woody fruit spur on the tree. The woody spur is a small part of the tree that plays a crucial role in producing cherries each year. Taking care during the harvest ensures that the tree can continue to bear delicious fruit in the future.
When picking cherries for cooking or canning it is often more efficient to pull the cherries off while leaving the stems attached to the tree. These techniques can save time and effort in the cherry-picking process.
